This is the official Mars Global Surveyor patch, and shows the spacecraft above Mars with stars in the background. A cartoon of the spacecraft trajectory can be seen leaving Earth (blue dot) and travelling around the Sun, Venus and Mercury to reach Mars. MGS launched in late 1996. A high resolution TIFF file is available.

This is my winning patch design for the Mars Pathfinder Project, which had its launch in late 1996. Yes, it's very similar to the MGS patch on the previous slide, but I think they wanted it that way.
